Acceleration Timer (Tape Timer)

Acceleration Timer (Tape Timer) (LSE)

This is a well-designed PSSC-type timer, easy to use and remarkably accurate. It plugs directly into any grounded 110 volt outlet with no need for a cumbersome transformer. The timer places a carbon dot on a special sheet of moving paper (included) exactly every 1/60 of a second, functioning in the same manner and with the precision of an electric clock. You can demonstrate the concepts of velocity, acceleration and friction when the spacing between the dots is measured and compared. The hardwood body is heavy enough to work without table clamps, although holes for attaching to standard support rods are included. We offer shielded electric conncections, adjustable tuning nut and permanently mounted brackets for the snug insertion of paper tape.
 
Includes: solid wood timer (4 x 5 x 18 cm); 100-ft roll of ticker tape paper, 24 carbon circles, 1 m cord with on/off switch, instructions. Wt: 45 g.

Acceleration Trolley

This device shows how the rate of acceleration of an object depends upon the angle of incline. It features an aluminum frame (“trolley”) with two low-friction pulleys. There are 3 holes in the bottom of the frame for easy attachment of weights, protected by brackets which let you place trolley at any point along the wire.
 
How to Use: Screw two hooks into your classroomn wall and stretch the included cable between them. Use tape to mark a midpoint on the wall. Raise the trolley and time its as it passes the marker. Move the marker to the position where the trolley passes in a known time and determine a, acceleration.

What happens to the oceans under the full moon? What flings you outward when your car cuts a corner too sharply?
 
It's easy to visualize the effects of inertial movement with this low cost device. Horizontal acceleration creates characteristic wave patterns to demonstrate inertial movement. Now, because liquid moves in the direction opposite to acceleration, you can actually see these waves by watching the pattern created by the colored liquid. You can even measure the patterns with the imprinted horizontal and vertical grid.

This counter-intuitive experiment often has to be seen to be believed. Duplicate Galileo's famous experiment off the Leaning Tower of Pisa! He used the traditional guinea and feather to show how heavy and light items fall at same rate in a vacuum despite their relative weights and sizes. Includes: an 81cm long tube, constructed of butyrate to minimize the likelihood that static will affect your results; substantial rubber caps on either end, one with a hose cock and rubber hose for evacuating the tube; a set of weights to simulate the ?guinea? and ?feather? and illustrated instructions. You need vacuum pump, not included.

This PSSC-designed kit can be used to show the effect of mass, radius and velocity on the centripetal force of a rotating body. The experiment uses the weight of one to 20 1g masses from one end of a cord as a counterweight to the pull of a rubber weight swinging in a circle overhead. Determine acceleration, speed and distances attained when applying a variable force.
