Surge Comparison test set can be used to detect insulation defects, winding faults in single and multi phases motor windings without changing coil connections, based on the comparison method, with a reference winding. The total voltage impressed on the winding is peak-to-peak, which can be selected to any required level by adjusting the output control and is read directly from the waveform displayed on the CRT screen. Distinct waveforms give indications of various defects such as:
Turn to turn short, Coil to coil short in same phase.
Phase to phase short, partial & complete.
Improper coil connections.
Reverse coil connections.
Open coil connections.
