Inertial Balance Kit (LSE)

This is used to quantitatively determine the inertial mass of an object and is a simple way to demonstrate Newton's First Law. You can calculate the periodic motion of the balance when pushed sideways, showing that its motion is independent of the effects of gravity. Includes a frame with two platforms (one with holes) connected by two firm, horizontal spring blades. We also include a cylinder of unknown mass which is suspended by a hook and rests in a hole in the platform. Detailed instructions. You need a clamp, not included.

Simple Form Truss (LSE)

Demonstrate and quantify the effect of force on a mechanical derrick or truss. This basic model provides an interesting introduction to simple bridge building by exploring compressions, tensions and force and equilibrium. Our kit includes: a half-meter knife edge with hooks on both ends; V-shaped clamp; instructions. Stand, masses, and spring scale sold separately.

Double Cone & Plane (LSE)

Defy gravity as our cone appears to roll upward. This visual demonstrator of the center of gravity consists of a wooden frame with diverging rails and a double-ended cone. The cone appears to roll upward; in actuality, it is the center of mass that is moving downward.

Investigating Energy Transfer

Investigating Energy Transfer (LSE)

Study heat and light with the simplest of materials - a black can, a silver can, and a connecting copper bar!
Light and heat - where would we be without them? Not alive on our wonderful earth, that is certain. But how do we use the light from the sun? How is it absorbed, reflected, heated, and conducted?
These abstract concepts can be demonstrated and studied with the few simple materials in our clever kit. Measure the temperature inside a dark bottle and a shiny bright bottle to determine the different ways light and heat are absorbed and radiated. Fill both bottles with water - one with hot, one with cold - and connect them with the metal bar. Observe how the temperature of the water changes.
Meets National Science Educational Standards and Benchmarks for Science Literacy.
• Observe how surface color affects the rate of energy absorption by an object
• Observe how surface color affects the rate of energy radiation from an object
• Measure temperature change in two containers connected by a metal bar
• Observe how conduction affects the temperature of objects in a system

Exploring Mystery of Tower (LSE)

Make the center of gravity the center of attention with this complete and intriguing class kit!
You can't bring the Leaning Tower of Pisa into your classroom. But you can determine what keeps it from falling! With the help of this comprehensive kit, the mathematical concept of the "center of gravity" can be observed, moved, and measured. Since its construction in 1173 AD, the Leaning Tower of Pisa has been a graphic symbol of unstable structure. Now you can build your own leaning tower and study what exactly makes it topple - when.
This kit consists of six (6) Leaning Tower of Pisa sets and six (6) protractors, enough for an entire classroom. Each set contains a center shaft and four cylinders to stack on top of each other. Each cylinder has a different density - two are metal, two are plastic. How far do you need to tilt the tower before it collapses? Which combinations are most stable?

Meets National Science Educational Standards and Benchmarks for Science Literacy.
• Experimentally determine the center of gravity of a structure
• Observe how the location of the center of gravity changes with changing mass distribution
• Explore how the location of the center of gravity affects structure stability

Accent What is Density? Kit (LSE)

What is Density, anyway? With this colorful kit, you can easily help your students grasp this concept in a non-mathematical way. Kit includes: (12) cans of magic dough, (1) box of toothpicks, (300) blue foam squares, (12) clear plastic containers, (1) Density Identification Kit, and instructions
